The very first mixtape in my journey…

Back in the fall of 1994, I was  just a normal kid.  I’d been caught the previous summer sneaking out late at night with alcohol in a buddies back pack.  I’d stolen cigarettes from my Grampy’s camper.  You know, I wanted to be cool.  Well growing up I loved music.  Only I loved the music that was given to me, like the stuff played on the radio or MTV (and bluegrass festivals, but that’s another story).

Then my Obi-won Kenobi came into my life.  He taught me that there was more music out there to be discovered.  He went on to make me several mix tapes.  I was introduced to Type O Negative, the Ramones, Matthew Sweet and Suicidal Tendencies amongst many others.  And so started my journey into the larger world of music (and art for that matter).

The person I am talking about is my dear friend Chauncey.  He’s commented here a bunch of times and is always one person I can count on to add a song or two to our collaborative mixtapes we make here.   We met when I was a little sophomore and he was a big senior.  I had to listen to him back then, because he was so much older and wiser!  (ROFL)   Really he is only like a year or so older than me, but you know how it seems when you are in high school.  Anyway, he was a big influence for me and am lucky to say we remain good friends to this day.

So to celebrate my bud, I wanted to do two things.  First as you can see below is the insert to the very first mixtape the Chauncey ever made for me.  As you can see it is a metal mix, he still is very into the metal scene (although you wouldn’t know it by looking at him, let’s just say family man!)  Here is a link to the Spotify version of the mix.  It is a little different because of certain albums and tracks not being available.  In addition I would like to start a new metal themed mixtape for us all.  Please pick 1-3 songs to add from any metal artist.  You can post you songs here in the comments and/or add the songs to the Spotify playlist.   I’ll post a list all songs and link to the playlist underneath the image below.

This mixtape is called All Mixed Up in 2012, Vol. 7 – Cast Iron Pans

So are our mix looks like this:

  1. Kill all the White People by Type O Negative from the album Bloody Kisses added by KidAJoe
  2. War Ensemble by Slayer from the album Season of the Abyss added by KidAJoe
  3. Mermaid by Amorphis from the album The Beginning of Time added by Chauncey B.
  4. Beat the Bastards by Accept from the album Blood of the Nations added by Chauncey B.
  5. Give A Little by Overkill from the album Ironbound added by Chauncey B.

Daddy, can I try your headphones on?

Hello faithful!  I’m sitting here in bed listening to some Portishead on my headphones while everyone else in my house is sound asleep.  As my wife can attest to, I love to crank my tunes out on our living space, but I love the comfort and the warmth of my headphone tenfold!

This afternoon one of my twin daughters “Thing 1” asked the question stated in the above title.  They of coarse see me with them on when they are watching Dora or Yo Gabba Gabba.  I have a few times let them put them on, and they both know not to touch my precious headphones without asking me.  My current headphones were such a deal too!  I bought them on clearance for 10 bucks when I worked for L.L.Bean.  I know! Bean’s sells headphone?  They were on clearance for a reason, no one would think to go to an outdoor sporting goods store for nice headphones.  I have a set of Solitude Linx Audio.  They are by far the best headphone I have ever had.   I personally think they match any top headphone out there, and sell for much cheaper than other equals out there. (even when not getting them on clearance)  Anyway, thats enough of a product plug for this post I guess…

So on to the point of this post is some tunes certainly sound better blasting from some speakers while other just feel so much better heard from a set of headphones.  So the next mixtape in our series of amazing mixes is going to be songs we love to hear though out private headgear.  I know this is one I’ll have fun with!  I can’t wait to hear what you got for us too!

So as usual let’s keep selections to three or less tracks per person.  You can post your suggestions in the comments section of this post, and for Spotify users you can also add your song(s) to the following Spotify playlist yourself.

All Mixed up in 2012, Vol. 7 – Help Me Obi-won Kenobi

I’m a self made man.

So I obviously have not been here much.  Life get in the way some times.  But life still continues.  So here is another mix tape.  Yeah I know what your thinking, that I am just trying to get out of actually posting any content in hope that you will not notice that you are the one posting the content.  Well you are wrong!  Well….sort of….

I actually got this idea from a comment I posted on facebook yesterday.

Fifteen different people posted different band and musicians, so what I’m going to do is make a mix tape from these suggestions.  Most of these suggestion are new band for me, so this will be a somewhat slow process since I will have to check them out a little first.  I’ll list the band below so we have no overlap if any of you would still like to add suggestions.  Please add more band!    So my rules set forth on myself, take a suggested band and listen to at least one album, then I will select up to 2 songs to post.

Simple format: You choose the artist, I choose the songs.  Here is who we got so far:  The Mars Volta, Glen Miller, Darlingside, Bassnectar, Bitch Magnet, Dave Mathews Band, NKOTB,  The Infamous Stringdusters, The Gaslight Anthem, Mustasch, Arcade Fire, Butch Walker and the Black Widows, Heartless Bastard, Amon Amarth, Chaos Machine, White Denim,  Avenged Sevenfold and Warrant.

I was the one who suggested The Mars Volta to my Facebook friends so I will start with that.   The playlist should start out with about 10 songs because I either already know the band, of have in the last 20 hours already started listening to them.  As always I will make a Spotify playlist for those of you who want to use this amazing FREE streaming software to listen to this mix.  It can be found here:  All Mixed Up in 2012, Vol. 6 – You said, I said. (if anyone want to take up the task of creating a YouTube playlist I’ll post it here too)

**New Addition: A way for everyone to hear the Mixtape without having Spotify! (I unfortunately could not post the actual player on wordpress) So a link to my new Tumblr Mixtape page.

Long Time No Tape

It has been a while since we have done a mix tape.  So to start to get myself back in the swing of things I figured we could start with a new mixtape.  The past week I was in sunny Key West, FL soaking in the rays.  It was 80 degrees down there and as you can imagine it was a  wonderful escape from the freezing cold of Maine.  So since my new wife and I are now back in the cold north and many of you are still a few months away from summer I think it is time to make a summer mix tape as away of getting our minds out of the winter blues.

So what song reminds you of summer and hot weather?  What songs do you bring with you to the beach?  What song do you listen to in your car with the windows down and your system up?

As always you can add songs though Spotify or just by posting a comment to this post.  You DO NOT need spotify to add a song!!! It is just a nifty way of us listening to the mix we make.  2-3 song are permitted as usual.

The first song I am going to add is Santeria by Sublime.  This is a song (and album) that reminds me of nothing but hot weather and cold beers.  When the warm weather finally makes and appearance here in Maine I automatically put this one on.

The second song I’m going to add is We Are Young by Fun. featuring Janelle Monae.  This album just came out, but I first heard this song while listening to Pirate radio in the Keys, so I will forever associate this upbeat song with the sun.

The last song I’ll add will actually be for my new wife.  I know that she loves Will Smith (much to my dismay!) and I know she loves this song.  If there is any song by D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince I would like it might be this one.  It is called Summertime. Enjoy!

This one goes out to my one true love…

The Ladies!   Ok, I do love the ladies, but I did steal that line from a They Might Be Giants song.   I wanted to salute all the ladies of music with a mixtape dedicated to them.  So the theme of this one is a song your favorite female vocalist.

As always, limit your selections to 1-4 songs.  Please try to post the song in the comments, for sometime I don’t realize you have added a song to a playlist on Spotify until several weeks later.  I don’t always get a chance to look at all the mixtape that frequently.   I did update the MASTER MIXTAPE page (link on the left of this post) to reflect songs added to several previous mixes.  Again after you have posted a song here in the comments feel free to add the song to the Spotify playlist below!

The Spotify playlists is here: All Mixed Up in 2012, Vol. 4 – Femme Fatale

I’ll try make a YouTube playlist that can be found here: All Mixed Up in 2012, Vol. 4 – Femme Fatale

  2. Black Tongue by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from Fever to Tell posted by KidAJoe

Samba Wayne Dofur

In a post SOPA funk.  The blog was doing great until the whole SOPA protest, at which point my blog to quote my brother in law, “went off”, clearly tripling my traffic for 3 days.  But the last two days traffic has been minuscule.  I should look on the brightside I guess, I’m had several new followers!   So to them welcome and feel free to tell me how you feel about my blog.

So it on that note, here is another one of our mixtapes to get us through the week.  Just a reminder that you can follow the “Master Mixtape” link to the right to listen and post songs to the 12 older mixtapes we have (are) making.  This weeks them is going to be a song(s) containing favorite guitar riff.

Song, Artist, and Album should be posted to the comments section of this post and should added to the below Spotify playlist. (get it already!)  As always you can post up to 4 songs to make it easier and to share more love.

The Spotify playlists is here: All Mixed Up in 2012, Vol. 3 – Dun Dun Dun!
