Put Me in Coachella! I’m ready to play!

For those who aren’t aware this weekend kind of kicks off the summer festivals.  (Ok, Ok, maybe South by Southwest does)  This years line-up includes a ton of great bands.  Ones I particularly enjoy are…

Day one: The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, M83, M.Ward, the Black Angels, and Grouplove

Day Two: Radiohead, Bon Iver, the Shins, Andrew Bird, Feist, The Head and The Heart, and tUnE-yArDs

Day Three: At the Drive-In, Florence + the Machine, Wild Flag, Gotye, Fitz and the Tantrums, First Aid Kit,  and Metronomy

The bands listed here are just the tip of the iceberg.  For a complete list go the Coachella line-up page.

This weekends Coachella performances are being streamed online via YouTube also!!  I actually got the screenshots you see in the post from the broadcasts.  The broadcasts are all in HD. (if your bandwidth permits)  Last night I watched The Black Keys, The Black Angels and The Arctic Monkeys.  A couple things to take into consideration Coachella takes place in Indio, California, so all all times on the site are Pacific Time.  That means headliners are all being broadcast at midnight or later for is east coasters.  Today’s live broadcast are starting at 3:55 PST (that’s 6:55 EST).  You can however go right now and watch select re-broadcasts of yesterday’s performances.  Oh yeah, almost forgot, the Coachella YouTube link.

The Black Keys killed it as usual.
Swedish House Mafia had a crazy awesome light show!
I HAVE to see the tUnE-yArDs live at some point.
This Shin probably played a great set, I was to enthralled with St. Vincent
Amazing! I knew her album was amazing. Her live performance was even better.
The only hotter than that outfit was Grace's voice.
Andrew Bird made me wish some other amazing performances didn't over lap
An always amazing (and beardless) Bon Iver

(I had Radiohead images, but some how I messed them up…)

If you go to the Coachella YouTube page you can watch about 15-20 videos from this weekends performances.  There are on a few songs by a few artist posted, and the don’t appear to be streaming and rebroadcasts today.

To err is human, to arr is pirate.

It seems only fitting that I should talk about piracy today, since the world wide web is so widely protesting the proposed SOPA.   For those who don’t know, SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act and is a bill now in congress that would enable the US Department of Justice as well as copyright holders the ability to websites and host enabling copyright infringement.  It is a bill that is widely supported by the motion picture and music industry and opposed by free speech activists.

Now as you can see both by my blog being blacked out for 12 hours today (01/18/2012) as well as my post from last night I oppose the bill.   The following why I oppose of the act and what I think of piracy in general.

First off, this bill definitely threatens free speech.  How many countless unofficial websites are dedicated to music of any particular artist.  These sites are meant to show appreciation for the artist and there work.  Many of these sights contain lyrics, discographys, concert playlists and even links to music and videos.  All thing that could be sited as copyright infringement.  Many of these sites as well as websites such as YouTube, Vimeo and Soundcloud all are hotbeds of expression, all containing the large amount of pieces that use material not owned by the artist.  My past blog post titled aaaaaaargh! is an example of someone creative work being in violation of not one but two copyrights.  In my eyes it is a very funny and clever video and would be something YouTube would have to pull in fear in a lawsuit.

Second, this has ramifications for the american economy.  In a time when the creation of more jobs is of utmost importance, this bill could force websites and web hosts to move out of the country to avoid dealing with the bill.   It could also force websites such as Tumlr, Vimeo and Soundcloud to go out of business since these websites are almost completely creator driven content.

I want to make clear that I don’t support copyright infringement.  I do believe that an artist does have the right to protect his or her art.  That person also has the right to make money from his or her art.  I do try to buy the music from the artist I love but have borrowed many songs from these artists also.  One of the major reason I subscribe to Spotify is to make the music I love legal.  I would love to buy everything I listen to, but that at the moment I am not independently wealthy, so I have to go the rent a song way.

Holy Roller Novocaine

Happy Sunday!  Of coarse its a happy Sunday here in the North East because the Patriots totally Tebowed the Bronos last night.  So as a salute to the Pats and for those of you who haven’t seen Jimmy Fallons latest laugh riot, here is TBowie…

Another day of playoff football today, but atleast I started the day with some tunes.  Yesterday I bought Bon Iver’s eponymous album as well as the Kings of Leon’s EP Holy Roller Novocaine on vinyl (the latter on red vinyl).  I was looking for Grizzly Bears album Veckatimist, but it wasn’t in stock at all.  Might have to order that one online.  The following is some KoL B-Side love for you from the above mentioned EP.

Something unfathomable lies behind every thought … something for which there aren’t any words.

The above is a quote from The Tower by Peter Weiss.  I have not ever read it, but came across the quote when doing some research last night.  Ironically at the exact moment I was reading it I was listening to an  amazing band that uses no lyrics in there songs.  Don’t worry you will find out the name of that band with the second track of this mixtape.   So with that, the theme of this mixtape is song without lyrics.   It can be an artist that just plays instrumentals, or it can be and artist who has just a single song with no lyrics/words.

Song, Artist, and Album should be posted to the comments section of this post and should added to the below Spotify playlist. (get it already!)  As always you can post up to 4 songs to make it easier and to share more love.

It’s Only Rock N’ Roll But I Like It!

So if you read my earlier post I’m sure you could guess how this weeks mixtape was going be themed.  So at the urging of Brian and his doubt that recent artist have forgotten how to “plug in”, the theme will be  Modern Songs That Rocked.  Yes we are talking about modern music here, I know it would be easier to come up with hold songs, but we have to prove to Brian that modern musicians have not ALL gone soft.  So let’s try to keep this to a 5 year window, 2008 until today.  All songs must not be unplugged!  We are looking for band that use instruments that need electricity.

All songs should be posted to the comments section of this post and should include Song, Artist, and Original Artist.  Feel free to comment why you love or hate the songs too.  Again you can post 2-3 songs per play list if you can’t narrow it down.

aaaaaaargh!

Thought you all might enjoy some music.  A buddy from worked reminded me about this a few weeks ago, and I’ve watched it about 15 times since.  Yes Outkast is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine.  One of the very few hip hop artists I like.  Hope you enjoy.

That’s Chocolate Diarrhea not Chocolate Dump!

How many of you have ever made a mixed tape or cd for someone?   I used to make them all the time.  With the invention of mp3s it seems like the day of sharing mixes is coming to an end.  Of coarse we’ve all been contributing to themed mixes here on my blog which has been both fun and interesting.   Well now I want to take this up a notch.

The next step in our progression of mixes is full fledged playlist created by one person.  This both brings us back to the days when we would make a mix for a friend or special new love interest and creates a mix that is full of the personality of it’s creater.   It also helps clear up the problem many of us have with just posting one to three songs.  Most of us have such large music love that narrowing it down to just a fewselect songs is difficult.

I do know that this will be more of a challenge for those of us who have very busy schedules.  For that reason I will only post one “full” mix tape a month.  We can all take a little more time to make these mixes for they will take a bit longer to put together on an individual basis.  I will continue to do our collaborative mixes in between.  I will again have themes to follow and as always I always welcome suggestions.

So for the first official mix is going to be free form.  What that means it can be anything you want it to be.  Just make a cool mix!

As always a few guideline just to keep these playlist from getting to out of hand.  Please keep this mixes on the 60-70 minute range max.  This is a rough goal, they can be more or less, but I know that I for one will less inclined to listen to whole mixes much longer than that. (atleast in one sitting)  The playlist can be posted one of three ways, you can make a Spotify playlist and/or youtube playlist and post the link, or you can just post names of the artists and songs list in the comments.  (I’ll create spotify playlists for all mixes and post them eitherway)

That’s about it, so have fun.   I can’t wait to hear YOUR mix!

So what am I so Afraid of?

I just called to say I love you!  I just called to say how much I care.  I just called to say I love you! And I mean it from the bottom of my heart.

So this will be the tenth and final mixtape of 2011.  I figured we would end the year with love.  Love is a many spendered thing.  Love lifts us up where we belong.  All we need is love.  I will always love you!  haha  Ok enough quotes from songs!  So let post your favorite love song,  it could be the song you share with that special someone, or the song you had your first kiss to.   Make it special!

All songs should be posted to the comments section of this post and should include Song, Artist, and Album.  This is a list I’d like to hear why these songs mean so much to you.  Please tell us who or why this song has been chosen.  If you have more that one song that is special to you that you would like to share, go ahead, but please as always try not to add more than 3.

As many know you can add song to the playlist yourself.  Just click on the following link and add it to you playlists in Spotify, then drag what ever song you want to add to the new playlist.  The Spotify playlists is here: Let’s make a Mixtape, Vol. 10 – So what am I so Afraid of?

I’ll make a YouTube playlist that can be found here: Let’s make a Mixtape, Vol. 10 – So what am I so Afraid of? (I will update this soon!)

So for me three songs come to mind.  The first is Through the Years by Kenny Rogers.  This is actually my parents wedding song, so though my parents love I’ve grown attached to it.  When this song comes on my mom automatically starts to tear up.  My view of love, in a big part comes from the love my parents have for each other.  The next song, Your Song as done by Ewan McGregor from one of my favorite movies, Moulin Rouge!  (directed by Baz Lurman)   This is a song that means a lot to a passed relationship I had.  Although we eventually fell out of love, this song still pull on my heart strings.  (this version is not on Spotify so I posted the original by Elton John) The last song I have to add to this mix is the song that reminds me of the love of my life, Andrea.  I wrote about this in the past in a blog post about song that remind me of someone. You can go HERE to read more about it.  Andrea and my song is of coarse You are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne.

Go Pirates!

So I had conversation with an old friend on Facebook the other day and she was telling about her current obsession with Mumford & Sons.  I also share a love for Mumford, and decided to dig into my youtube favorites for a special live recording the band did in a book store somewhere over in the UK.  So this one goes out to Mrs. Amanda up in Northern Maine.  Enjoy!

(a little side note, if you own Mumford’s first album, Sigh No More,  you can download these tracks as special bonus!)

Mixed Drinks and Duct Tape!

So I noticed a surge in Spotify users lately and as you can see I’ve been neglecting my blog quite badly as of late.  So I thought it was a fine time to dig out a mixed tape for you all.  Seeing as how two thousand and eleven is coming to an end I figure we could all post our favorite song(s) this year.

All songs should be posted to the comments section of this post and should include Song, Artist, and Original Artist.  Feel free to comment why you love or hate the songs too.  Again you can post 2-3 songs per play list if you can’t narrow it down.
